CSI History

A Historic Union

The Church of South India was inaugurated on the 27th of September 1947, after thirty years of union negotiations between the South India United Church β€” the united body of Presbyterians and Congregationalists β€” the Anglican dioceses in South India and the South Indian districts of the Methodist Church. At the time of the formation of the CSI, fourteen new dioceses were created with over 10 lakh members. It is the result of a historic merger uniting Anglican, Methodist, Congregational, and Presbyterian traditions, making it the second-largest Christian church in India with over 4.5 million members.

The union brought together the Anglican Church of India, Burma, and Ceylon; the South India United Church (SIUC); and the Methodist Church, creating a unified episcopal structure. It was the first union of its kind to bring together Episcopal (Anglican) and non-Episcopal (Methodist/Congregational/Presbyterian) ministries, influencing later unions in North India and Pakistan.

The CSI emphasizes a Trinitarian approach, incorporating the Apostles' and Nicene creeds, with a focus on both infant and believer baptism. While formed in 1947, its roots go back to missionary activities in the 18th century, including the Basel Mission and Anglican efforts. The establishment of the CSI was driven by the goal of Christian unity β€” "That they all may be one" β€” which aimed to strengthen Christian witness in India by overcoming denominational divisions.

Key Milestones

Mysore Diocese & Beyond

1947

The Mysore Diocese was one of the 14 new dioceses created. It had within it a Christian community of 39,537 members, of which 13,912 were communicant members. It had 8 area Councils: Bangalore Civil, Bangalore City, Mysore, Shimoga, Hassan, Bellary, Tumkur, and Kolar Gold Fields (KGF). St. Mark's Cathedral was designated as the Cathedral and Rev. Premaka Gurushanta, the presbyter of Hudson Memorial Church, was consecrated as the first Bishop of the Diocese in St. Mark's Cathedral on 4th October 1947.

1958

The United Basel Mission Church of India (UBMCI), Bombay Karnataka acceded to the CSI and became part of the Mysore Diocese.

1964

A CSI Synod Commission chaired by Mr. Rajaiah D. Paul recommended the creation of smaller dioceses and administrative units.

1969

The Executive Committee of the Mysore Diocese resolved that a scheme for the creation of three new dioceses be remitted to the next Diocesan Council. The historical resolution for the creation of three new dioceses was passed in the Diocesan Council which met in Bangalore from 7th to 10th November 1969.

1973

One of the first major decisions of Mysore Central Diocese was to identify an area within diocesan limits to be designated as the official mission field. After surveys, Hunsanahalli in Kanakapura taluk was selected and an evangelist was appointed.

1976

Rev. Nirmala Vasantakumar was ordained as a deacon β€” only the second woman in the Church of South India to enter ordained ministry β€” marking the diocese's pioneering role in ordaining women for pastoral ministry.

Karnataka Central Diocese

Scope & Mission

Geographic Reach

The Karnataka Central Diocese has churches and institutions in 6 revenue districts of Karnataka β€” Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Tumkur, Kolar, Ramanagara, and Chickballapur β€” and one taluk in Tamil Nadu (Hosur). It is subdivided into 4 Area Councils: Bangalore Civil, Bangalore City, Tumkur, and KGF, each with its own Area Council. The diocese has its headquarters in Bangalore.

Worship & Traditions

The diocese is unique not only because it embraces all the uniting traditions β€” Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, Congregational, and the Basel Mission β€” but also because it provides for worship in western, folk, Carnatic, and other musical styles in six languages, in rural, semi-urban, urban, and cosmopolitan contexts. Its architectural styles range from indigenous to Gothic, European Classical, English Baroque, English Renaissance, and orthodox Scottish.

Ministry & Leadership

Committed presbyters and deacons, with at least two bachelor's degrees and after undergoing rigorous ministerial training, provide leadership to the churches. The diocese has the distinction of pioneering the cause of ordaining women for pastoral ministry. The diocese continues to recognize and affirm the ministry of the laity by commissioning them as ministerial assistants specialising in Christian counselling, missionary activities, and Christian education.

Education

The diocese, with an educational mission dating back to the early part of the 19th century and with its wide array of educational institutions, has a rich legacy of igniting the minds of numerous students and empowering them to contribute, progressively, to the life of the world. The creation of the first and only college in Bangalore to impart legal education exclusively for women is one of the many unique achievements of the diocese.

Medical & Social Ministry

The medical ministry in the diocese dates back to the last quarter of the 19th century with the establishment of mission hospitals catering to the needs of women, children, and other oppressed sections of Indian society. The ministry among children began with the setting up of an orphanage in Tumkur in the 1870s. The diocese continues to empower destitute children, street children, and children from impoverished and broken families through Day Care Centres, Residential Vocational Training Centres, Boarding Homes, and Refuge Centres.

Evangelism & Holistic Mission

The diocese acknowledges evangelism as its primary responsibility and strives to manifest the love of Jesus Christ in the world through a spirit of respectful dialogue with people of other faiths. The diocese understands its mission as intervention in the life of the community with the objective of facilitating holistic living through its educational and medical institutions, Special Education School, Children's Homes, Vocational Centres, New Life Centres, Senior Citizens' Homes and other projects, with a preferential option for the vulnerable and marginalised.

“To God be the glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus for all time, forever and ever. Amen.”
